PARLIAMENTARY SELECT COMMITTEE ON FOREIGN AFFAIRS IN WEASHINGTON DC
Members of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Foreign Affairs of Ghana’s Parliament, on Thursday January 15, 2015, paid a courtesy call on His Excellency Lt. Gen. (Rtd) Joseph Henry Smith, Ghana’s Ambassador to the US, as part of their activities during a study tour of the United States of America (USA).
In his welcome address, Ambassador Smith briefed the delegation on the activities of the Mission in the 57 years of Ghana /US relations and on the attainment of Ghana’s strategic interest in the economic cooperation between the two countries.
He said relationship with the Ghanaian Community and their welfare, is very important to the Mission and the Diaspora Desk was going to intensify it to facilitate the engagement of the community and their contribution towards national development.
The Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Emmanuel Kwasi Bandua, told Ambassador Smith that the delegation was in the US on a study tour of the US Congress, as part of the process of strengthening the democratic system of government Ghana has accepted.
He said their discussions with members of the US Congress centered on Ghana/ US relations, financing of Ghana’s 2015 budget, renegotiating of AGOA and the signing of the Millennium Challenge Compact (MCC).
The Ranking Member of the committee, Hon. Isaac Osei, commended the Mission for the handling of MCC and the current renegotiations with regards AGOA and hope the Mission will put more efforts to get it completed.
He said another area, which required the attention of the Mission was the negotiations current going on between Ghana and the IMF, adding that the completion of the negotiations and the signing of an agreement, would boost economic activities in the country and give some encouragement to the business community and confidence in the Ghanaian economy.
Present at the meeting with the Head of Mission were Sectional Heads of the Mission.
The eight-member delegation was led by Hon. Emmanuel Kwesi Bandua, Chairman, Hon. Mahammed Masawud, Vice Chairman and Hon. Isaac Osei, Ranking member.
The rest were Hon. Sarah Adwoa Safo, Deputy Ranking member, Hon. Sualihu Dandaawa Alhassan, member, Hon. Samuel Ambre, Member, Hon. Patrick Boamah, member and Eunice Korantemaa Abeka, Assistant Clerk.
