Census secretariat releases provisional figures
Dr. Grace Bediako, the Government Statistician, has announced the provisional figures of the 2010 Population and Housing Census, saying Ghana’s population now stands at 24,233,431.
She explains that the current national population represents a 28. 1 percent increase over that of 2000 which was 18,912,079, reflecting an annual growth rate of 2.4 percent.
Dr. Bediako made the announcement in Accra, at a press conference, pointing out that the overall population of females is 12,421,770 representing 51.3 percent, whilst the males are 11,801,661, also representing 48.7 percent.
She noted that the Ashanti Region has the highest population of 4,725,046, up from the 2000 population figure of 3,612,950, followed by the Greater Accra Region, with a population of 3,909,764, up from the 2000 figure of 2,905,726, while the Upper West Region has the lowest population of 677,763, as against the 2000 population of 576,583.
Dr. Bediako said the Census Secretariat will release the final result of the 2010 Population and Housing Census, with full details of all the various demographic characteristics in March 2012.
