National Urban Planning Policy to be developed

Development experts from the National Development Planning Commission, the Town and Country Planning Department and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) are meeting to develop a national urban policy to guide the planning and development of urban areas in the country.

The policy, which will be a key factor for human development, is to facilitate the even development of rural and per-urban settlements and ensure a balanced re-distribution of urban population.

Nii Armah Ashietey, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, said during the opening of the meeting that the achievement of this urban development objective is dependent on effective planning, phasing and co-ordination of investment service, infrastructure and training in support of medium and large settlements.

He, therefore, stressed the need for accessibility to housing, electricity, water supply and security in urban areas to be improved to enhance the living conditions of the people.
