Major boost for salt industry
Mr. Mike Hammah, the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, says government will give a major boost to the salt industry to maintain a competitive advantage in its production, as a result of the numerous natural salt sites along the country’s coastal lines.
He adds that with the discovery and commercial production of oil in Ghana, there will be high demand for salt for the petro-chemical and fertilizer industries, hence the decision to pay more attention to the industry.
Mr. Hammah made this known in Accra when he toured the offices of the Minerals Commission, saying currently, the annual salt demand for the ECOWAS region is about 4.5 million metric tons but the country can only produce 600,000 metric tons.
He, therefore, charged the Minerals Commission to formulate the necessary legislation on salt to provide the regulatory framework for developing the industry, adding government will also develop the Ada Songhor Salt project into a limited liability company to enable it raise enough revenue for salt production to meet the shortfall in the country.
