Government to spend $5m on ICT project

Mr. Haruna Iddrisu, the Minister of Communications, says government will provide $5 million for Information and Communication Technology (ICT) project to empower the youth in that sector.

He adds that as a result, the offices of the State Housing Corporation (SHC) will be rehabilitated to serve as an ICT hub in the country, whilst similar centres will also be established in all regional capitals.

Mr. Iddrisu made this known in Tamale during the inauguration of NIIT, an ICT Education Training centre by H.E. the Vice-President, Mr. John Mahama, saying the initiative is aimed at making the country a manpower pool for industry requirements and an attractive place for global business process outsourcing.

H.E. John Mahama commended the management of the centre for the decision to extend their services to Tamale to cater for the northern sector and urged them to open similar ones in the rest of the northern regions.

He pointed out that ICT is critical to development in today’s global environment, adding that government is collaborating with its partners to open up the sector for the empowerment of the people, especially the youth.

He, therefore, advised the people in the area to take advantage of the centre’s accessibility in the metropolis to enroll and improve their knowledge and skills in computer technology to make them more marketable.

NIIT, Tamale is the seventh NIIT centre to be established in the country after those in Accra, Tema, Kumsai and Takoradi.
