Hon. Joe Gidisu

Hon. Joe Gidisu, Minister of Roads and Highways says government has sourced GH¢27.98 million from its development partners to construct 42 steel bridges countrywide.

He said under the Bridge Development Programme, a total of 250 steel bridges have been constructed through donor fund from the Department for International Development in the United Kingdom, Japan International Co-operation Agency and the Government of Spain.

Mr. Gidisu disclosed this at the sod cutting ceremony in Volta Region, for the construction of a steel bridge over River Todzi on the Gornikope-Averdre feeder road in the Akatsi district.

According to him, work on the 45-meter bridge, estimated at GH¢620,000, that was commenced last month is expected to be completed in 18 months to improve road access in the area.

The Minister noted that government has identified 5,000 water crossing points that hinders access to rural areas, adding that out of the number, 1,200 sites have been classified as critical for effective functioning of the road network.

Mr. Gidisu said  further that, routine maintenance of 160 kilometres of road, surfacing of Abor-Tadzewuxevi and 20 kilometres Akatsi Agormor Ave-Dakpa road, including the construction of storm drains will soon be undertaken to give the district a face lift.

He opined that nine of the bridges are located in the Volta Region and will be undertaken by Acrow, an American construction company in the country.
