Assemblies to receive Waste Management Equipment.
Mr. Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, says his Ministry is procuring a set of waste management equipment, valued at $ 10 million from India for distribution to Metropolitan and Municipal Assemblies in the country.
He adds that, the Ministry, over the last three months gave out GH¢13 million to support the activities of some Metropolitan and Municipal Assemblies, whilst an additional GH¢600,000 was released to the Mobile Maintenance Unit of the Ghana Highway Authority to help improve sanitary conditions.
Mr. Ofosu-Ampofo made this known in Accra, at an emergency meeting between the ministry, metropolitan and municipal chief executives in the Greater Accra Region and waste management contractors.
Nana Ama Adobea, the President of the Environmental Service Providers Association, expressed her concerns that during the rainy season, roads leading to the various dumping sites became unmotorable, thereby making it impossible for the waste contractors to regularly collect waste from clients.
The equipment includes, 25 skip trucks, 35 garbage compactor trucks, 30 hook loader equipment and 16 suction-machine trucks.
