President Mills honours National Heroes
The state today conferred national honours and awards on 109 personalities who distinguished themselves in various aspects of national life at the 2011 National Honours and Awards ceremony in Accra.
The awardees, which included two foreigners, public servants, statesmen, footballers, religious leaders and the judiciary, among others were decorated by President John Evans Atta Mills for their distinguished and meritorious services to Ghana. The category of awards included the Companion of the Order of the Volta, Officer of the Oder of the Volta, Member of the Order of the Volta, Grand Medal and Medal for Gallantry Awards.
President Mills congratulated the award winners for their contributions and sacrifices for the betterment of the country and said their efforts send positive signals to all citizens, especially the youth to emulate.
He said due to tenacity and determination, the 2011 award winners were able to excel in every area they found themselves, hence the conferring of National Honours and Awards on them.
Touching on the criteria for selection, President Mills revealed that lots of efforts and objectivity were employed in selecting the 2011 award winners.
He however admitted that there are a number of Ghanaians whose contribution to the nation merits national awards and will be honoured in due course.
The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Joyce Adeline Bamford-Addo expressed her sincere gratitude to the President for recognising their good work and effort.
Throughout the history of Ghana, National Honours have been awarded to citizens of the country and sometimes foreign nationals in recognition of their devoted services to the country.
In attendance to grace the occasion were the Vice President John Dramani Mahama, the Chief Justice, Mrs Georgina Theodora Wood, the Chief of Staff, Mr Henry Martey Newman and Ministers of State.
The award winners for the Companion of the Order of the Volta were Rt Hon. Joyce Adeline Bamford-Addo, Mr Issifu Ali, Ambassador James Victor Gbeho, Mr Harry Sawyerr, Most Rev. Joseph Oliver Bowers (SVD), Mr Ernest Owusu-Poku and Black Stars of the 2010 Group.
Winners of the Officer of the Order of the Volta were Mr Jeremias Mama Akita, Mr Emmanuel Botchway, Mr Lionel Molbila, Prof Ebenezer Laing, Prof Sefah Dede, Prof Nana Agyewodin Adu-Gyamfi Ampem II, Prof Nana Jane Opoku Agyemang, Prof Emeritus Kwame Sarpong, Mr Ernest Bediako Sampong, Mr Daniel Mireku-Gyimah, ING Kwaku Twum Boafo and ProfMarian Ewurama Addy.
Mrs Stephanie Henrietta Baeta-Ansah, Mr Charles Yao Mensah, Mrs Leticia Benewah Osafo-Addo, Mrs Bridget Jubilee Katsiriku, Prof John Owusu-Addo, Naa Alhaji Iddrisu Abu (Kumbun Naa Yiri II), Justice (rtd) Alexander Kobina Baah Ampiah, Justice Samuel Glenn Baddoo, Mr Robert Amaltinga Atuguba, Madam Akusika Barbara Rose Baeta, Mr David Kweku Ghartey-Tagoe and the Black Satellite FIFA Under 20 Champions 2009 were awarded Members of the Order of the Volta.
The Grand Medal Awards went to Shiekh Mustapha Ibrahim, Mr E H Michel Haddad, Mr John Eshun, ACP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, the Black Satellites 2009 and Black Stars 2010 and Technical Team of both Teams.
The Medal for Gallantry Awards were given to Divisional Officer Grade II, Kwame Seddoh (posthumous ), Sub Officer, Isaac Newton Adjei (posthumous), Group Officer Hannah Yawson, Petty Officer Class II, Dongiri Paul (posthumous), General Constable Frank William Blankson (posthumous), Sergeant Baiden Ebenezer Morgan, Lance Corporal Mohammed Iddrisu and Adam.
