3,000 communities to be hooked to national grid

Dr. Joseph Oteng-Adjei, Minister for Energy has announced that 3,000 communities throughout the country are being connected to the national grid under the Rural Electrification Project.


He said the government, through the ministry of energy has undertaking a number of projects under the National Electrification Scheme (NES) to increase the national average access to 80 percent by 2015.

The Minister made this known in the Accra at the signing of a contract agreement between the government and MBA Power Private Limited and Shreem Electric Limited for the electrification of 110 communities in the Ashanti and Brong-Ahafo Regions.

Dr. Adjei said the NES, instituted in 1989, was the government’s principal instrument for achieving its policy of the extending electricity to all parts of the country over a thirty-year period from 1990 2020.

Dr. Oteng-Adjei said another 300 million dollar loan facility from the US Exim Bank had been secured for another 1,400 communities in the Central Western and Brong-Ahafo Regions.

He said the project, which is to be completed in 18 months, is being funded with a loan facility from the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID).
