President John Evans Atta Mills says, the National Identification Authority (NIA) will be given the needed resources and support to secure the national identity cards.

President John Evans Atta Mills says, the National Identification Authority (NIA) will be given the needed resources and support to secure the national identity cards.

He said given the significant importance of the exercise, the government will ensure that the programme remained on course and as many people as possible registered, as the law demanded.

President Mills gave the assurance when he was presented with his national identity card by Dr. William Ahadzie, the Executive Secretary of the NIA, at the Castle, Osu, in Accra.

He described the occasion as historic and expressed the hope that the exercise will serve its intended purpose.

Dr. Ahadzie, for his part, said 12.5 million people have so far been registered in six regions of the country, with the Greater Accra alone recording 500,000 people.

He mentioned the regions where the people has so far been registered as Central, Western, Easter, Volta, Ashanti and Greater Accra and gave the assurance that other regions will soon have their turn.

Dr. Ahadzie said the programme has been very effective, stressing that the NIA is undertaking a mopping-up exercise and decentralizing its operations to ensure that all Ghanaians are registered, as required by the law.
