Government announces subsidy on price of outboard motors

Mr. Kwesi Ahwoi, the Minister of Food and Agriculture says government has announced a subsidy on the price of 40 HP out board motors from GH¢7,500 to GH¢4,900 to boost the fishing season which is expected in late June.

Again, he said, the National Premix Committee Secretariat, in collaboration with the Energy Commission and the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), has adequately prepared to increase the supply of premix from 300,000 gallons a week to 450,000 gallons per week during the 2012 fishing season.

Mr. Ahwoi announced this at a durbar of fishermen drawn from various landing beaches in the Greater Accra Region.

He said the forum was to enable stakeholders in the industry, the Ministry of food and Agriculture (MoFA) and the government to share efforts at ushering in the 2012 major fishing season.

He said the outboard motors will be sold directly to the fishermen on outright cash-down basis through the Landing Beach committees to ensure that genuine fishermen benefited.

Mr. Ahwoi said the supply of the equipment formed part of a pilot project jointly implemented by the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC).

He said each of the 13 selected fishing communities were provided with 10 piece of the fish-finder equipment.
