Online map platform for elections launched
Mr. Jerry Sam, the Project Director of Africa Elections Project (AEP), has launched an online platform designed to map and display reports from the Electoral Commission, civil society groups and citizens on the upcoming general election in Ghana.
According to him, the map which will display all the Polling Stations, Parliamentary and Presidential Candidates and Political Parties by Constituency and Regions, seeks to make the map a one-stop shop for election information.
Mr. Sam made this known in Accra, when he interacted with the Media, adding that the online map will also provide information, from security issues to polling station logistics and voter education activities.
He said the inspiration behind the project is to encourage full citizen participation in the electoral process by providing them with modern, attractive, user-friendly and interaction, wells-structured online election platform to enable citizens, journalist and civil society organizations, share news, audio and videos on the elections.
Mr. Sam further stated that, the Africa Elections Project which is dubbed Ushahidi which means “testimony” in Swahili, aims at providing leadership in the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), to cover Ghana’s upcoming general election in December.
He said the project has already started mapping incidents around the biometric voter registration exercise which is still underway, at the link hppt://ghanavotes.com.
He mentioned that the Ghana version is being done via multiple channels, including a toll-free SMS short code (prefix aep to 1902 on all network and 7000 on MTN), email, twitter and web forms.
