More jobs with $3bn loan- President Mills

President John Evans Atta Mills has assured Ghanaians that more jobs would be created in the country with the $3 billion Chinese loan to mitigate the unemployment situation in the country.

He said the money would be used to expand the economy which would intend provide more job opportunities.

Addressing workers at the National May Day celebration in Sunyani, the president acknowledged workers for their contribution towards the development of the country, adding that their welfare is of great concern to his government and that the necessary steps would be taken to improve conditions of workers.

He commended workers for opting to dialogue with government for the implementation of the Single Spine Salary Structure when he first assumed office in January 2009 instead of pushing for increment as announced by the previous government when they were leaving office, saying the action of the labour group was a step in the right direction and in the interest of the country.

According to him, a greater percentage of workers have so far been migrated unto the (SSSS) and this has more than doubled the wage bill of government from GHs2.4 billion to GHs5.8 billion. This according to president implies more money in the pocket of workers and with relatively low inflation over the years, workers have seen improvement.

President Mills also commended the leadership of the Trade Union Congress for being on top of issues in the labour front in spite of few labour agitations.

The Secretary General of the Trade Union Congress, Mr. Kofi Asamoah advised workers to be tolerant and accommodating in order to promote and preserve the peaceful atmosphere in the country.

He said, TUC would resist any move by any group to jeopardize the democratic successes the country has chalked.
