Funds for Pwalugu Dam Studies
Dr. Joseph Oteng Adjei, the Minister of Energy says, the Agence Francaise de Development (AFD) has committed €5.6 million towards feasibility studies of the Pwalugu Multi-purpose dam project to be constructed by the Volta River Authority (VRA).
He adds that the amount is part of a €50 million financial package set aside for the Kpong Hydroelectric Generating Station Retrofit Project.
Dr. Oteng Adjei made this known in a speech read on his behalf, at Akosombo, during a stakeholders consultative meeting on the theme; ‘Socio-economic development: the role of the Pwalugu Dam’, stressing that the multi-purpose dam will be sited on the White Volta river, about 30 kilometers southeast of Bolgatanga.
Dr. Oteng-Adjei said the development of the project marked a significant milestone in line with the Renewable Energy Act 2011 (Act 832), towards the development of the several small and medium potential hydro power sites with capacities below 100 MW.
The Minister therefore showed gratitude to the World Bank for expressing interest in the development of the project.
He recounted the significant role played by the Akosombo and Kpong hydroelectric power plants in the development of the country’s economy, which currently accounts for about 65 percent of the total electricity generation mix in the country
He commended the VRA for spearheading the initiative and urged all participants to cooperate with the VRA for the realization of the project.
The dam is expected to incorporate 80 megawatts (MW) of hydroelectric power to boost the local economy; in particular the Taloensi District of the Upper East Region, upon completion in September 2019.
