‘KLM committed to Ghana’
KLM’s Regional Manager for Ghana, Liberia and Sierra Leone, Mr Axel Metselaar, has expressed optimism about the future of Ghana’s economy, especially as the court case will be determined.
Mr Metselaar, who confirmed the turbulent times businesses, including the aviation industry, had faced in the last six months since the election petition hearing, said brisk business had returned as of last month, with increasing arrivals and departures.
The KLM regional manager, who has been in the country for the past nine months, said he was hopeful gold, cocoa and other commodity prices would rally, the court case would soon be resolved and the economy would pick up again.
“I am confident about the coming six months. In July, the airline industry saw business pick up again, compared to the same period last year. So we hope we’ll do even better in the coming months,” Mr Metselaar said in Accra when he interacted with a section of the media.
He said KLM was committed to its operations in the country having been here for 55 years. The airline has introduced a number of services on its international routes which applied on the Ghana-Amsterdam.
KLM’s Flying Blue Club Africa site enables small and medium scale businesses from Ghana and other African countries, especially exporters of non-traditional products, to showcase their products to the world.
“Club Africa is a social media (electronic) platform for people to understand Africa and let Africans showcase their products to the world,” Mr Metselaar said at the media briefing, and added that the site was growing in popularity and, therefore, encouraged more SMEs to take advantage of it.
KLM, which currently flies daily to Ghana with an Airbus A330-300 series aircraft, has also introduced the Blue Connect, a booking tool for corporate institutions to manage their travel schedules.
